This workshop is being organised by Kathy Bruce, and an enrolment form can be downloaded here – click here .  The workshop is taught using either acrylic and/or gouache, however artists using any medium including watercolour, pastel and oil or coloured inks will benefit. This workshop is designed for all painters from beginners to advanced, from 16 years of age upwards.

About Catherine Hamilton

Catherine’s work is bold, vibrant and full of energy. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and Australia, including several solo shows. She has gathered various awards for her paintings, particularly for her portraits and figurative work and was a finalist in the Camberwell’s Travel Scholarship Award.
Catherine is a respected and sought after tutor and has been teaching and lecturing for over 22 years throughout Australia to various art groups and societies as well as overseas.
Catherine was president of the Pastel Society of Victoria from 2005-2009, a member and tutor of The McClelland Guild of Artists and a member and tutor of the Peninsula Arts Society.

Workshop: The Language of Colour
Most painters are obsessed by colour; it is one of the most fundamental expressions of our work and, it seems, we spend a lifetime trying to grasp its nuances and power. Constant studying of the works of the great masters can inspire but we artists seem to have an innate desire to understand and know the palette used in the paintings.
As a painter and tutor I get asked two questions more than any other…
What colour is that and how did you mix it?
Why did you use that colour?

We crave to learn all we can about colour and its relationships but often don’t know where to start. The palettes of all great painters begin with a selection of just a few tubes of paint that can be mixed to create the harmony and unity of the composition. It’s knowing and understanding what colours to start the journey with that sows the seed for success.
“They’ll sell you thousands of greens. Veronese green and emerald green and cadmium green and any sort of green you like; but that particular green never.” Pablo Picasso.
It is for this reason that painters need to have the knowledge and ability to create that green, the green that they want, and understand how. The workshops and various courses I teach on colour open up this world of understanding.
This is a very popular course and goes through understanding the language of colour most importantly, it will show how and why they can be created and then adapted to any range of palette used – all painters in all media need to understand how colour works and, critically, how they can create their own palette. There will be a number of visual exercises and compositions completed addressing how to see and respond to colour
